Volunteers

Desert Challenge is a youth/collegiate ballroom dance competition held annually in April and hosted by the Desert Challenge Dancesport Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The competition is a day-and-a-half event where students compete in various dances, such as Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Hustle, Salsa, etc.

Why volunteer with us?

The Desert Challenge Dancesport Foundation works in our schools and community to organize and teach ballroom classes in after-school programs, bringing health benefits and enjoyment of ballroom dance. The goal is for these students to compete at the Desert Challenge competition.

  • Get free admission: Ongoing and event volunteers are needed for various jobs from event setup to teardown (Friday to Sunday). After working a two-hour shift at the event, you’ll receive a free admission ticket for that day.
  • Gain first-hand experience: You will see and work behind the scenes in running a dance competition, especially volunteering for a runner.
  • Work with an established event: Desert Challenge has been running for over 30 years, and we plan to keep growing in the future.
  • Trend with pop culture: With the increasing popularity of TV shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, ballroom dancing is flourishing. Even with the shutdowns of the last two years, it has made an explosive comeback!
  • Impact an inclusive sport: Ballroom dancing encourages confidence, leadership, respect, and artistic expression. One of the goals of the Foundation is to introduce ballroom dancing to as many young people as possible and find ways to integrate young and older dancers. Only some people can play or be on a sports team, but everyone can learn to dance.
